To meet and greet legendary growers
The World Pumpkin Capital of Half Moon Bay will kickoff its 41st annual Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off with a special Movie Screening & BBQ Night from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 12 at Cameron's Inn Outback, 1410 Cabrillo Highway South, in Half Moon Bay.
The event will feature filmmaker Daria Matza's "Rise of the Giants," a 75-minute feature length documentary about giant pumpkin growers coming out this fall, and a hearty BBQ buffet. Dress appropriately as the movie will be shown outdoors on a giant 9-foot by 16-foot screen.
Attendees will also be able to meet and greet legendary growers in town to compete in the 41st annual Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off -- the Super Bowl of weigh-off events -- that will be held from 7 to 11 a.m. Oct. 13 at the IDES Grounds, 735 Main St., in Half Moon Bay.
A $30,000 bonus mega-prize will be offered to any grower who sets a new world record at the Half Moon Bay Weigh-Off. Tim Mathison, of Napa, Calif., holds the current world record -- 2,032 pounds. Gary Miller, also of Napa, set the California record -- 1,985 pounds -- last year at Half Moon Bay.
